The Sistine Chapel Arrives In Tottenham!

Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition

I was really surprised and intrigued when I heard that the ‘Sistine Chapel’ had arrived in Tottenham and so I decided to check out the exhibition for myself.

The exhibition reproduces Michelangelo’s paintings that are in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. The paintings are made larger than those in the chapel, and in this way, people are able to see how amazing these paintings are.

I don't know much about Michelangelo. I remember watching the film, ‘The Agony and the Ecstasy’ as a child, which is all about how Michelangelo painted the ceilings between 1508 and 1512 and the difficulties he had with Pope Julius II at the time. As a child I remember how difficult and painful this process seemed to be. Now as an adult it is actually quite amazing to be able to see these excellent paintings.

The exhibition has used technology to reproduce the paintings and make them larger and now because they are larger and closer it is easy to see how brilliant these paintings are.

The exhibition space is an old warehouse building on Ashley Road N17, which has been turned into exhibition space. It is certainly no frills, but it is fun to have this exhibition in Tottenham. The streets around the exhibition building are bang in the middle of all the development that is taking place in Tottenham Hale but there in the middle of all this change, visitors to the exhibition can slow down, relax and take in the beauty of these paintings. The exhibition is suitable for adults and children although there isn't any interactive material for children.

The paintings are there to be marvelled at. The paintings themselves are Michelangelo's interpretation of stories from the Bible. These include The Creation of Adam and his depictions of the Noah, various biblical prophets, and stories from the book of Genesis. Personally, I do not believe that God is an elderly white man with a long flowing beard, but these paintings are Michelangelo’s and I enjoyed appreciating them for what they are. My favourite is the painting of the prophet Jeremiah. You could actually see the worry lines on his forehead.

I just couldn't miss an opportunity to see the reproductions of these brilliant paintings on my own doorstep. I think the brilliant aspect of the exhibition is that you can appreciate the Sistine chapel artwork and get really close to it without having to get on a plane. I do hope that we get other exhibitions as Tottenham and indeed Haringey continues to change and develop.

I was so impressed I might go again.
