Going for Goat 🐐 with Mary Berry
I decided to make Sausage and Onion pastries which is a recipe from one of the cook books by Mary Berry.
In her recipe, Mary uses ordinary sausage meat but I decided to do something different and I used goat 🐐 meat.
A few months ago I saw a program with Paul Hollywood (yes him again) and he visited an organic goat farm and made a really great pie. Paul Hollywood is always making really great pies and puds on TV and actually has a series by that name.
So I decided to order some organic goat meat from the place he visited.

Apparently goat meat is becoming very popular and I have come across news articles online which question why we don't eat more goat meat. They also seem to be positioning goat meat as the 'next big thing', saying that eating goat meat could save the planet.
Whatever! Some of us have been eating goat meat for years. I didn't need to buy goat meat on line, because it is actually sold in some of the independent (largely 'ethnic') butchers near me, but I was intrigued by the word 'organic'. What difference would organic rearing make to the taste of the goat meat if any?
In my opinion, organic goatmeat has a lighter flavour than the goat meat from my local butchers. Usually goat meat has a heavy distinct flavour which actually reminds me of how goats smell, but don't worry the meat does taste good especially in Nigerian pepper soup.
The flavour makes the meal!
Organic goat meat has a more subtle hint of that goaty smell and that's why I decided to experiment with the sausage rolls.
I have to say they turned out well but they were certainly not as 'dainty' or as neat as Dame Mary Berry's. Perhaps this is because goats aren't dainty animals 🤔 but then neither are pigs 😄
Anyway my pasties had an added zing because I also used chilli flakes and smoked Paprika. I liked this flavour. Mary Berry isn't a great fan of chilli so I am not sure she would like these pasties and I don't think I have come across a recipe where she has used goat meat.
Obviously each to their own. I knew my goat meat pasties were a success when I heard my son rustling around in the kitchen.
These are also very easy to make because the recipe uses ready made pastry. Thank you Mary 😋
I was pleased with the result. I am also pleased that my baking has reached the stage where I experiment with recipes and adapt them to my own tastes. I think that's what makes cooking such an adventure.
I did like the lighter flavour of the organic goat meat and I will be ordering from them again. They also have a goat milk and lavender soap which is just beautiful.
